Aug. 8th, 2011 06:52 pmUgh. Anyway, that's enough of my whinging bullshit, let's do some memes! Robbed from chibimarchy and Evil Insane Monkey.
- Drop any ‘ship from a fandom that you know I have some knowledge about in the comments. I will rant about aforementioned romantic pairing. This may be incoherent gushing or exclamations of disgust, depending on what it is.
- Give me a character and I’ll break their ass down:
How I feel about this character
All the people I ship romantically with this character
My non-romantic OTP for this character
My unpopular opinion about this character
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. - Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:
The first character I fell in love with:
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
The character everyone else loves that I don't:
The character I love that everyone else hates:
The character I used to love but don't any longer:
The character I would shag anytime:
The character I'd want to be like:
The character I'd slap:

Date: 2011-08-08 09:05 pm (UTC)Meme 2: Cooper
How I feel about this character: LOVE him. Love him beyond all words. Would carry him around in my pocket if I could.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Albert, Albert, Albert, Albert and Albert. Also Audrey, on my less-petty days Sheriff Truman, and on my sick-and-wronger days, Windom Earle.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: I loved his interactions with the Log Lady - the part where she sees him in the Double R and tells him her log as something to say, and she's like, "ask it" and he hestiates and she's all, "I thought so!" in this really sneery way, like HE'S the weirdo because he can't bring himself to question a log. And then later at the cabin when he goes to take a cookie and she slaps his hand!
My unpopular opinion about this character: while I wasn't overly invested in it, I don't hate the idea of Annie/Cooper the way a lot of the fandom seem to.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish there had been a third season and we could have seen Cooper dealing with being possessed by BOB and obviously since this is MY fantasy he would win in the end and everything would be okay.
Meme 3: Eerie, Indiana
The first character I fell in love with: Dash. OH DASH.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Melanie. I think the first time I watched it I was too jealous of her for being pretty and having two hot guys after her. Of course, now I'm not thirteen anymore so I don't irrationally view her as the competition for the affection of MADE UP PEOPLE.
The character everyone else loves that I don't: I don't know how much the rest of the fandom love him (if at all) but I really didn't like Howard from Tornado Days. I just found him really irritating.
The character I love that everyone else hates: Again, I don't know that everyone else HATES him, but I adore Mayor Chisel - he's so dodgy and unrepentant!
The character I used to love but don't any longer: I don't think there are any that I've gone off over time. The ones I loved best back in the day are still the ones I love now.
The character I would shag anytime: Dash. YES EVEN THOUGH HE IS ABOUT FIFTEEN, I WOULD HIT THAT. He doesn't have an identity, it's not like people could prove statutory rape.
The character I'd want to be like: Janet Donner - she was smart and tough enough to survive on her own for a year, and unlike practically every other kid in Eerie who isn't Marshall, her family didn't UTTERLY SUCK.
The character I'd slap: Tod's dad. And Sarah-Bob's entire family. And Simon's parents, even though you never see them.
My five favorite characters: Dash, Marshall, Simon, the second Mister Radford, and Mayor Chisel
My five least favorite characters: Tod's dad, OH MY GOD. Sarah Bob's dad. Nurse Nancy. Howard. Simon's dad.
My deep dark fandom secret: Sometimes, I secretly wish they would do a remake of the show, even though I know it would most likely suck beyond the telling.

Date: 2011-08-08 09:17 pm (UTC)I liked Annie/Cooper...didn't know people didn't. Huh. And IA with the third season necessity (and of course him winning).
I don't want them to remake it because I don't want other people to play the characters, but I would love if they made a movie with the original actors coming back and had it be them grown up and still dealing with Eerie
hence my fic ideano subject
Date: 2011-08-08 09:27 pm (UTC)The anti-Cooper/Annie thing might be one of those weird internet things - you know when it;s actually just a small group of people who hate it, but they're super-vocal, and everyone else doesn't really care so it looks like it's an overwhelming majority complaining about something?
For me there would totally not be a point in a third season if Cooper didn't win in the end - I mean, there are downer endings and then there are endings so depressing that your fanbase COMMITS FANDOM SUICIDE as soon as it airs. And he's the heart of the show, so I couldn't imagine it continuing without him, and I know I definately wouldn't be watching if it did.
I know exactly what you mean about a remake, especially since we already had the Other Dimension and it was... not good, but I look at stuff being produced by HBO and AMC and how great they are, and I think, "if you guys would just take a shot at doing a kids show, I bet you would ROCK IT SO HARD!" and, frankly, I just WANT THERE TO BE MORE EERIE INDIANA.
God, if they made a movie like that it would probably complete my whole life! Did you find a beta for your fic, btw?

How I feel about this character: oh GOD he makes my skin crawl! I know that's kind of the point of him, but he does it TOO WELL for me to be comfortable with!
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Nobody! oh my God! *panicky flail* I was going through the Bleach fic on A03 and there were some Gin/Izaru ones there and even seeing the tag wigged me out.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: NOBODY! He shouldn't be allowed around other people, he's just too creepy! He can hang around with Aizen and the blind dude because the blind dude can't get fraked out by his creepy face and Aizen is a full-on monster so he is immune, but that's IT!
My unpopular opinion about this character: it can't be THAT unpopular a reaction to just be horrified by him, can it?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. As creepy and awful as he is, I would much rather have had Gin and Aizen's utter bastardry than have to suffer through the stupid fake vampires. Horrible baddies are infinately preferable to LAME POINTLESS baddies. Still, they'll be back after the Bount arc, so I guess that's okay.
Meme 3:
The first character I fell in love with: I don't remember, but I suspect it was Ishida, given that he is dorky, wears glasses, and is basically the Digimon Emporer but a bit older.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Consumption Boy. When he first showed up, I was like, oh great, a generic long-white-haired pretty boy. But then I saw that flashback where his second in command gets monsterfied and he's just awesome and lovely and now I adore him.
The character everyone else loves that I don't: BEAD HEAD! Did you know people write porn for him? He doesn't even have facial expressions! All he does is stand around looking vaguely sour all the time!
The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know that other people hate him, but I completely love Kenpachi and I hardly ever see people talking about his obvious greatness. Clearly they are jealous.
The character I used to love but don't any longer: Aizen!
The character I would shag anytime: Renji
The character I'd want to be like: the little boy captain's sidekick who seems to have difficulty fastening her robe.
The character I'd slap: I would say the scary scientist, but I'd be afraid to touch him for fear of getting pure creepiness on my hands. So I'll go with Aizen, who is HORRIBLE but not gross.
My five favorite characters: tiny healer boy with the bags under his eyes, Pink Samurai, Consumption Boy, Stern Hot Librarian, Kenpachi (and as an aside, the little pink girl who hangs around with Kenpachi)
My five least favorite characters: Aizen, Gin and the creepy scientist, because they're baddies, and the boss bount and the bount who had a fish, for the FAR WORSE CRIME of bring boring.
My deep dark fandom secret: okay, you know before when I said I freaked out about the existance of gin/girly draco porn? well, i did... but I was a tiny bit intrigued. OH GOD DONT JUDGE ME!

I didn't yet. Though I'm not quite done with chapter 1 so I have a bit of time.

Date: 2011-08-08 10:37 pm (UTC)2) The skin crawl is absolutely justified. Gin was clearly written to make everyone's skin crawl, and totally succeeded. (And he was sabotaging poor Kira (aka Emo Blond Vice-Captain) too -- it's become clear that all three of Aizen, Gin, and Tousen were deliberately sabotaging their vice-captains to some extend to make them less effective. (Compare how Hinamori and Kira used to be, in the flashback episode to when they were at the Academy with Renji, to how they are now.) Scum.)
3) I applaud your comments and greatly appreciate them. (And I dearly love Ukitake. He is such - well, such a genuinely nice guy. )
(Side note about Ukitake: a lot of people claim he's all "honour above reason" due to that speech he gives Rukia during the Kaien affair, which she remembers later, when he says that bit along the lines of "there are two ways a man can be fighting: to protect others, and for his own pride, and when he's fighting for the sake of his own pride then you have to let him do it." Hardly anyone seems to notice the implied second half of that speech - that if a man is fighting to protect others, then you do whatever the hell is necessary.)
(In fact, both Shunsui and Ukitake are known to cheat. And look at Nanao, our favourite Stern Hot Librarian. Remember the bit when Chad's just been taken down, and she notices that he's still alive, and says "Shall I finish him off, sir?" before Shunsui stops her. I wonder who taught her that bit of combat pragmatism . . .)

Date: 2011-08-08 11:05 pm (UTC)The guy with the 69 is Tousen's sidekick, right? He didn't seem all that screwed-over to me - shaken up at first, as you would be, but the little girl sidekick and girly-draco looked like they were set for full mental breakdowns after it all came out. Poor girly draco! Poor little girl sidekick!
What I got from that speech Ukitake gives to Rukia was more like, that hollow killed that dudes wife and turned her body into a killin' puppet, so it was normal for his sidekick to want personal revenge and that Rukia should respect that, even if it went against her own instincts to help - it didnt sound like honour above reason to me, it was more like respecting someone elses wishes. And yeah, I kind of assumed that since the guys wife was already dead, it wasnt as though there was anything he or Rukia could do that wold help anyways.
Not that I would approve of her killing Chad, because obviously he is One Of The Good Guys, but in general I think it's just sensible to kick an opponent when he's down - how much trouble could be avoided if you just killed someone when they first crossed you, instead of letting them off the hook to scurry away, brood on their wrongs and then come back with some mad scheme to take you down?
When did Shunsui and Ukitake cheat? Have I missed it or did I not reach that part yet?

3) Since Eerie's already been done, how about Luther?

Date: 2011-08-08 11:39 pm (UTC)The guy with the 69 is Tousen's Vice-Captain, yes. (Name is Hisagi.) He seems fairly stable at the moment, but later on we get some more detail about his zanpakutou (you haven't seen it yet, don't worry) which suggests that Tousen's style of handling him may have left him with some long-term problems.
(The Zanpakutou arc is pure filler, and comes a while later on from where you are, but it is entertaining. It involves various people's zanpakutou materialising as humans and running around fighting their owners. And yes, that includes Shunsui's and Ukitake's. (Though not Nanao's, dammit, because we still haven't seen in canon what her shikai is. I live in hope. The most we know, from a picture in the artbook of the assembled vice-captains, is that her zanpakutou is a short blade and she keeps it up her sleeve. That bit where Yamamoto makes her faint and she's clutching at her sleeve? She's trying to draw her sword. Probably a good thing that he _did_ take her out of the fight before she could do anything openly disloyal like drawing a blade on the Captain Commander, and probably quite deliberate on his part. He wasn't annoyed with _her_, after all.)
I totally agree with you about that speech from Ukitake to Rukia, but there have been people in the fandom who read it as "everyone should always leave everyone else to fight their own battles". Which is both wrong and stupid. :)
Shunsui and Ukitake haven't actually cheated yet, but we do get to see them cheating - or at least, fighting strategically, hitting from behind, trying to distract the opponent, etc - in a later bit. As Shunsui puts it, when two other characters (who you haven't seen yet) complain about him getting involved in their fight, when you're a captain and fighting on this level, your job is to win the fight.
(Sorry if I'm ranting a bit. I'm rather fond of them.)

Date: 2011-08-08 11:58 pm (UTC)Shortly afterwards I would be found dead of hunger and thirst, because I had spent EVERY WAKING MOMENT writing slash for them to to exclusion of everything else, and thus had starved to death.
Then I would go to heaven, where, ironically, I would get to read new and filthily awesome fic about them every single day and it would never get old or trite or use weird penis euphamisms that are silly and make me laugh and ruin the moment.
THAT IS MY THOUGHTS ON DASH/MARS.
2: Simon Holmes
How I feel about this character: LOVE him. I always kind of forget to talk about how great he is because when I talk about Eerie, I usually talk about Dash/Mars (see above), but really, I adore Simon.
He's so incredibly sweet and yet he has this terrible home life - there's a scene in the Lost Hour where Marilyn says something about his bedtime and he's like, "My parents really never told me when I have to go to bed," and there's this HORRIBLY AWKWARD pause where she's quite clearly trying to think of a nice way to say, "THATS BECAUSE YOUR PARENTS ARE AWFUL SIMON!" and it just made me want to cry for him.
Again in Broken Record, after Tod's dad has just completely humiliated him in a scene that was really hard to watch, Simon says "Does your dad know my dad? They could start a club" and again, my heart just broke for this little kid who's having to live with that kind of abuse.
And of course, the absolute worst one, Mars and Simon in Simon's bedroom in ATM with a Heart of Gold and a man and a woman giggling next door, and Mars says "sounds like your mum and dad are having a party" and Simon says, "my mum's not home." Oh. My. God.
And it was so dark and so awful and yet through it all, Simon remains this perpetually cheerful, engaged, enthusiastic little kid.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: well, he's nine, so none.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Simon/Marshall's mum - she kisses him goodnight and takes him to the movies and either buys or makes him a birthday cake with his name on it. I love Marilyn Teller.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I dunno, is Eerie a big enough fandom for there to be popular or unpopular opinions? My main opinions about him is that he is lovely and needs to be cuddled, and I'm pretty sure most if not all of the fandom would agree.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: In general, I just wish there had been more episodes, so we would have gotten to see more from all the characters.
I would have liked to see Simon as he got older, and more of his relationship with Harley as they both grew up - I see Simon trying to look out for him and be the responsible older brother, while Harley goes down the other road and turns into one of those cat-torturing hellions you sometimes get in families where the parents are complete nightmares.

Date: 2011-08-09 12:00 am (UTC)The first character I fell in love with: Alice. I started watching it because it had Idris Elba, but Alice captured my heart from the moment she said: "Did they make me a freak? Yes. Did I hate them for it? Absolutely. Did I kill them?" *almost-sarcastic pause* "No."
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Ripley. At first he basically reminded me of every stalkerish fanboy-type character in anime ever (specifically, JJ from FAKE), and he was kind of amusing but in an i-can-take-you-or-leave-you way, and then Zoe died and John's whole life went to shit and Justin was right there, always willing to believe him and trying to cover for him.
The character everyone else loves that I don't: Jenny from the new series. I'm aware that most of the things that annoy me about her are just normal teenage behaviour, but CHRIST she is irritating!
The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know if other people hate him, but I like Shenk, I love how he's all softly-spoken and courteous and baldie but underneath it he is in fact SUPER BADASS.
The character I used to love but don't any longer: Ian Reed, because he is a baddie and also dead.
The character I would shag anytime: Luther
The character I'd want to be like: Alice
The character I'd slap: Jenny
My five favorite characters: Alice, Luther, Ripley, Shenk, and Rose Teller from the first series
My five least favorite characters: Ian Reed (after he went evil) Jenny's mum (Jenny is an annoying teenager, but her mum has no excuse) the handbag killer dude (loved the shots of the dead girls on the hillside and the creepy traffic shots, but the guy himself, what a boring sad little man! which I think was the point) the satanist (way too pretentious for my taste in villians) and that stupid nephew of the old crime hag in season two who jenny killed. he was just... so embarrassing as a baddie, basically all his scariness came from people being afraid of the old crime hag.
My deep dark fandom secret: though I will freely admit to shipping Alice/Luther, I kind of also secretly ship Luther/Ripley. Truths.

Date: 2011-08-09 12:34 am (UTC)2) Jack: How I feel about this character: LOVE him. He was originally my favourite character and remained a top five all the way through the series. I cried a little bit when Ebony got him sent off to the... doom camps or whatever they were.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: I have no desire to read porn about them, but I thought Jack and Ellie were so sweet together - I was so gutted when she dumped him for Luke and so pleased when he came back and they reconciled. In non-canon terms, I do like a little bit of Jack/Lex and I always thought that Dal had a bit of a crush on him (to which Jack was oblivious)
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Lex, although his interactions with Taisan are also hilarious. Basically any conversation where Jack gets to be skeptical and/or snippy with people.
My unpopular opinion about this character: There doesn't seem to be much love for Jack/Ellie, but I adore them as a couple
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he hadn't vanished for so much of the later half of the show! Also, I wish we could have gotten to see more of him being cranky, sleep-deprived and generally wonderful
3) Tribe:
The first character I fell in love with: Jack
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Bray
The character everyone else loves that I don't: Jay
The character I love that everyone else hates: I wouldn;t say that everyone hates her, but I think Ebony can be kind of a polarizing character. Also, I hear people say that Bray was boring, but later in the series I got to quite like him
The character I used to love but don't any longer: Amber
The character I would shag anytime: Jack
The character I'd want to be like: oooo, tough one - I think probably Ruby, because she was tough enough to hold her own while running a bar in the Tribe's whole fucked up new world order
The character I'd slap: Selene
My five favorite characters: Jack, Lex, Bray, KC, Ebony
My five least favorite characters: Ram, Jay, Ved, May, and Slade because he was just this "OH SO SUPER-COOL" character except he never did ANYTHING to justify why we were all supposed to be impressed by him
My deep dark fandom secret: I totally ship Lex/KC. Obviously when KC is LOADS older, don't judge!

Date: 2011-08-09 09:59 pm (UTC)Clearly they haven't shown us her sword yet because when it's revealed, it's going to be a full-on WMD, so they're hiding it in preparation for the DRAMATIC REVEAL!
And yes, really, if a situation is so bad that a captain has to seriously fight someone, then you don't get to cry when they full-on try to take them down. That's just weak villianizing, I feel.
no subject
Date: 2011-08-09 10:07 pm (UTC)And yes. I have definite hopes about her sword being Interesting when we get to see it.
It's interesting to note that there is a definite age divide among the Captains. A lot of them are quite recent (within the last century). A few are very old. Yes, there is a reason for this, and it may have something to do with Yamamoto's current extreme views on justice/order/etc, but it doesn't come out for a while . . .

Date: 2011-08-09 10:46 pm (UTC)Do people age in the soul society? I'm kind of confused about that, because Rukia and Renji have flashbacks when they're little, then they're older but apparently they've been that age for a hundred years, and the little boy captain was a little boy in his flashbacks and now he's a captain but he's still a little boy.

Date: 2011-08-09 10:51 pm (UTC)I imagine Renji would have been regretting it for the next century. What a good thing they ran into Captain Mom (to use a common fan nickname) instead. Well, for some values of good . . .
no subject
Date: 2011-08-09 10:54 pm (UTC)Ageing in Soul Society seems to be weird. People seem to advance (slowly, in some cases) to a particular age, then sort of stick there. Maybe it's to do with psychological self-image? Certainly the older Captains have been looking as if they're middle-aged to old for centuries now, and most of the current crop of vice-captains have been looking in their twenties or so for a few decades.
