Ugh. Anyway, that's enough of my whinging bullshit, let's do some memes! Robbed from chibimarchy and Evil Insane Monkey.

  • Drop any ‘ship from a fandom that you know I have some knowledge about in the comments. I will rant about aforementioned romantic pairing. This may be incoherent gushing or exclamations of disgust, depending on what it is.

  • Give me a character and I’ll break their ass down:

How I feel about this character
All the people I ship romantically with this character
My non-romantic OTP for this character
My unpopular opinion about this character
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

  • Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:

The first character I fell in love with:
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
The character everyone else loves that I don't:
The character I love that everyone else hates:
The character I used to love but don't any longer:
The character I would shag anytime:
The character I'd want to be like:
    The character I'd slap:
    My five favorite characters:
    My five least favorite characters:
    My deep dark fandom secret:

In a flashback much later, you get to see Nanao when she was a little kid. Too, too adorable. (Much, much later.)

The guy with the 69 is Tousen's Vice-Captain, yes. (Name is Hisagi.) He seems fairly stable at the moment, but later on we get some more detail about his zanpakutou (you haven't seen it yet, don't worry) which suggests that Tousen's style of handling him may have left him with some long-term problems.

(The Zanpakutou arc is pure filler, and comes a while later on from where you are, but it is entertaining. It involves various people's zanpakutou materialising as humans and running around fighting their owners. And yes, that includes Shunsui's and Ukitake's. (Though not Nanao's, dammit, because we still haven't seen in canon what her shikai is. I live in hope. The most we know, from a picture in the artbook of the assembled vice-captains, is that her zanpakutou is a short blade and she keeps it up her sleeve. That bit where Yamamoto makes her faint and she's clutching at her sleeve? She's trying to draw her sword. Probably a good thing that he _did_ take her out of the fight before she could do anything openly disloyal like drawing a blade on the Captain Commander, and probably quite deliberate on his part. He wasn't annoyed with _her_, after all.)

I totally agree with you about that speech from Ukitake to Rukia, but there have been people in the fandom who read it as "everyone should always leave everyone else to fight their own battles". Which is both wrong and stupid. :)

Shunsui and Ukitake haven't actually cheated yet, but we do get to see them cheating - or at least, fighting strategically, hitting from behind, trying to distract the opponent, etc - in a later bit. As Shunsui puts it, when two other characters (who you haven't seen yet) complain about him getting involved in their fight, when you're a captain and fighting on this level, your job is to win the fight.

(Sorry if I'm ranting a bit. I'm rather fond of them.)

The bit in question is quite some way in the future (in the "Turn back the Pendulum" arc), so don't stress yourself...

And yes. I have definite hopes about her sword being Interesting when we get to see it.

It's interesting to note that there is a definite age divide among the Captains. A lot of them are quite recent (within the last century). A few are very old. Yes, there is a reason for this, and it may have something to do with Yamamoto's current extreme views on justice/order/etc, but it doesn't come out for a while . . .

There is lots and lots and lots of Bleach. Which is good if you like it. :)

Ageing in Soul Society seems to be weird. People seem to advance (slowly, in some cases) to a particular age, then sort of stick there. Maybe it's to do with psychological self-image? Certainly the older Captains have been looking as if they're middle-aged to old for centuries now, and most of the current crop of vice-captains have been looking in their twenties or so for a few decades.

Evidence seems to suggest that everyone in Soul Society can catch diseases. And it is actually a medical fact that if you get TB, even though the disease may be cured, you can still end up with permanent lung scarring/damage, which might explain Ukitake's Incurable Cough of Doom.

(It's actually stated elsewhere in canon that he got the TB when he was quite young, and that was why his hair went white early. It's also canon that he writes a children's series for the Seireitei newspaper. I love the Bleach background. :))

(Alas, it's given in some of the background material/character books, rather than being in an episode or chapter. Though there is the "everyone goes to the seaside" filler episode where Ukitake shows up in swimming trunks...)

Ah, I knew I had it somewhere. http://unedited.livejournal.com/227062.html - a set of translations of bits from the character book about the various Divisions, which someone did before it was formally translated into English. :)
