Aug. 8th, 2011 06:52 pmUgh. Anyway, that's enough of my whinging bullshit, let's do some memes! Robbed from chibimarchy and Evil Insane Monkey.
- Drop any ‘ship from a fandom that you know I have some knowledge about in the comments. I will rant about aforementioned romantic pairing. This may be incoherent gushing or exclamations of disgust, depending on what it is.
- Give me a character and I’ll break their ass down:
How I feel about this character
All the people I ship romantically with this character
My non-romantic OTP for this character
My unpopular opinion about this character
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. - Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:
The first character I fell in love with:
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
The character everyone else loves that I don't:
The character I love that everyone else hates:
The character I used to love but don't any longer:
The character I would shag anytime:
The character I'd want to be like:
The character I'd slap:

How I feel about this character: oh GOD he makes my skin crawl! I know that's kind of the point of him, but he does it TOO WELL for me to be comfortable with!
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Nobody! oh my God! *panicky flail* I was going through the Bleach fic on A03 and there were some Gin/Izaru ones there and even seeing the tag wigged me out.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: NOBODY! He shouldn't be allowed around other people, he's just too creepy! He can hang around with Aizen and the blind dude because the blind dude can't get fraked out by his creepy face and Aizen is a full-on monster so he is immune, but that's IT!
My unpopular opinion about this character: it can't be THAT unpopular a reaction to just be horrified by him, can it?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. As creepy and awful as he is, I would much rather have had Gin and Aizen's utter bastardry than have to suffer through the stupid fake vampires. Horrible baddies are infinately preferable to LAME POINTLESS baddies. Still, they'll be back after the Bount arc, so I guess that's okay.
Meme 3:
The first character I fell in love with: I don't remember, but I suspect it was Ishida, given that he is dorky, wears glasses, and is basically the Digimon Emporer but a bit older.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Consumption Boy. When he first showed up, I was like, oh great, a generic long-white-haired pretty boy. But then I saw that flashback where his second in command gets monsterfied and he's just awesome and lovely and now I adore him.
The character everyone else loves that I don't: BEAD HEAD! Did you know people write porn for him? He doesn't even have facial expressions! All he does is stand around looking vaguely sour all the time!
The character I love that everyone else hates: I don't know that other people hate him, but I completely love Kenpachi and I hardly ever see people talking about his obvious greatness. Clearly they are jealous.
The character I used to love but don't any longer: Aizen!
The character I would shag anytime: Renji
The character I'd want to be like: the little boy captain's sidekick who seems to have difficulty fastening her robe.
The character I'd slap: I would say the scary scientist, but I'd be afraid to touch him for fear of getting pure creepiness on my hands. So I'll go with Aizen, who is HORRIBLE but not gross.
My five favorite characters: tiny healer boy with the bags under his eyes, Pink Samurai, Consumption Boy, Stern Hot Librarian, Kenpachi (and as an aside, the little pink girl who hangs around with Kenpachi)
My five least favorite characters: Aizen, Gin and the creepy scientist, because they're baddies, and the boss bount and the bount who had a fish, for the FAR WORSE CRIME of bring boring.
My deep dark fandom secret: okay, you know before when I said I freaked out about the existance of gin/girly draco porn? well, i did... but I was a tiny bit intrigued. OH GOD DONT JUDGE ME!

Date: 2011-08-08 10:37 pm (UTC)2) The skin crawl is absolutely justified. Gin was clearly written to make everyone's skin crawl, and totally succeeded. (And he was sabotaging poor Kira (aka Emo Blond Vice-Captain) too -- it's become clear that all three of Aizen, Gin, and Tousen were deliberately sabotaging their vice-captains to some extend to make them less effective. (Compare how Hinamori and Kira used to be, in the flashback episode to when they were at the Academy with Renji, to how they are now.) Scum.)
3) I applaud your comments and greatly appreciate them. (And I dearly love Ukitake. He is such - well, such a genuinely nice guy. )
(Side note about Ukitake: a lot of people claim he's all "honour above reason" due to that speech he gives Rukia during the Kaien affair, which she remembers later, when he says that bit along the lines of "there are two ways a man can be fighting: to protect others, and for his own pride, and when he's fighting for the sake of his own pride then you have to let him do it." Hardly anyone seems to notice the implied second half of that speech - that if a man is fighting to protect others, then you do whatever the hell is necessary.)
(In fact, both Shunsui and Ukitake are known to cheat. And look at Nanao, our favourite Stern Hot Librarian. Remember the bit when Chad's just been taken down, and she notices that he's still alive, and says "Shall I finish him off, sir?" before Shunsui stops her. I wonder who taught her that bit of combat pragmatism . . .)

Date: 2011-08-08 11:05 pm (UTC)The guy with the 69 is Tousen's sidekick, right? He didn't seem all that screwed-over to me - shaken up at first, as you would be, but the little girl sidekick and girly-draco looked like they were set for full mental breakdowns after it all came out. Poor girly draco! Poor little girl sidekick!
What I got from that speech Ukitake gives to Rukia was more like, that hollow killed that dudes wife and turned her body into a killin' puppet, so it was normal for his sidekick to want personal revenge and that Rukia should respect that, even if it went against her own instincts to help - it didnt sound like honour above reason to me, it was more like respecting someone elses wishes. And yeah, I kind of assumed that since the guys wife was already dead, it wasnt as though there was anything he or Rukia could do that wold help anyways.
Not that I would approve of her killing Chad, because obviously he is One Of The Good Guys, but in general I think it's just sensible to kick an opponent when he's down - how much trouble could be avoided if you just killed someone when they first crossed you, instead of letting them off the hook to scurry away, brood on their wrongs and then come back with some mad scheme to take you down?
When did Shunsui and Ukitake cheat? Have I missed it or did I not reach that part yet?

Date: 2011-08-08 11:39 pm (UTC)The guy with the 69 is Tousen's Vice-Captain, yes. (Name is Hisagi.) He seems fairly stable at the moment, but later on we get some more detail about his zanpakutou (you haven't seen it yet, don't worry) which suggests that Tousen's style of handling him may have left him with some long-term problems.
(The Zanpakutou arc is pure filler, and comes a while later on from where you are, but it is entertaining. It involves various people's zanpakutou materialising as humans and running around fighting their owners. And yes, that includes Shunsui's and Ukitake's. (Though not Nanao's, dammit, because we still haven't seen in canon what her shikai is. I live in hope. The most we know, from a picture in the artbook of the assembled vice-captains, is that her zanpakutou is a short blade and she keeps it up her sleeve. That bit where Yamamoto makes her faint and she's clutching at her sleeve? She's trying to draw her sword. Probably a good thing that he _did_ take her out of the fight before she could do anything openly disloyal like drawing a blade on the Captain Commander, and probably quite deliberate on his part. He wasn't annoyed with _her_, after all.)
I totally agree with you about that speech from Ukitake to Rukia, but there have been people in the fandom who read it as "everyone should always leave everyone else to fight their own battles". Which is both wrong and stupid. :)
Shunsui and Ukitake haven't actually cheated yet, but we do get to see them cheating - or at least, fighting strategically, hitting from behind, trying to distract the opponent, etc - in a later bit. As Shunsui puts it, when two other characters (who you haven't seen yet) complain about him getting involved in their fight, when you're a captain and fighting on this level, your job is to win the fight.
(Sorry if I'm ranting a bit. I'm rather fond of them.)

Date: 2011-08-09 09:59 pm (UTC)Clearly they haven't shown us her sword yet because when it's revealed, it's going to be a full-on WMD, so they're hiding it in preparation for the DRAMATIC REVEAL!
And yes, really, if a situation is so bad that a captain has to seriously fight someone, then you don't get to cry when they full-on try to take them down. That's just weak villianizing, I feel.

Date: 2011-08-09 10:07 pm (UTC)And yes. I have definite hopes about her sword being Interesting when we get to see it.
It's interesting to note that there is a definite age divide among the Captains. A lot of them are quite recent (within the last century). A few are very old. Yes, there is a reason for this, and it may have something to do with Yamamoto's current extreme views on justice/order/etc, but it doesn't come out for a while . . .

Date: 2011-08-09 10:46 pm (UTC)Do people age in the soul society? I'm kind of confused about that, because Rukia and Renji have flashbacks when they're little, then they're older but apparently they've been that age for a hundred years, and the little boy captain was a little boy in his flashbacks and now he's a captain but he's still a little boy.

Date: 2011-08-09 10:54 pm (UTC)Ageing in Soul Society seems to be weird. People seem to advance (slowly, in some cases) to a particular age, then sort of stick there. Maybe it's to do with psychological self-image? Certainly the older Captains have been looking as if they're middle-aged to old for centuries now, and most of the current crop of vice-captains have been looking in their twenties or so for a few decades.

Date: 2011-08-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(It's actually stated elsewhere in canon that he got the TB when he was quite young, and that was why his hair went white early. It's also canon that he writes a children's series for the Seireitei newspaper. I love the Bleach background. :))

Date: 2011-08-09 10:51 pm (UTC)I imagine Renji would have been regretting it for the next century. What a good thing they ran into Captain Mom (to use a common fan nickname) instead. Well, for some values of good . . .
