Feb. 22nd, 2005 08:20 pm*grumbles*
So last night my keyboard, having been subjected to three years of spillage and splutterings, finally gave up the ghost after I accidently emptied half a pint of boiling water over it. Yes, well, I never claimed to be Real Life Competent. Therefore today, instead of lounging in bed, playing with Thlayli and writing another thousand words of my dissertation, I had to go into town to buy a new one.
Simple, right? And I stopped off at a couple of the second-hand stores near the bus station to buy myself some books to compensate for having to give up my Day of Rest And Wanton Perving. So that wasn't too bad. Especially because I got "Five PEople You Meet in Heaven" for a pound, and Richard Adams' Shardik for 25p. Things could have gone a lot worse, considering.
Except that when I got home, half the keys on my brand new keyboard didn't work. So I had to take it back, get a refund and buy a new one.
At which point, it started to snow.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like snow. Plus I was listening to "Wandering Child" on my trusty CD player, so it kinda fit the mood. But this morning it was warm enough for me to be dreaming about doing Naughty Things with melted chocolate and Gerry Butler's sun-warmed skin, and so I was dressed appropriately. (For the weather, I mean, not for doing Naughty Things with Gerry Butler.) And by this point, I am shivering in my shitty broken boots and my toes are going numb.
So, I go to Starbucks. To get coffee. And obviously since it's above Borders, I have to go and look at the books. And obviously I have to get a couple to read while I drink my coffee and wait for the feeling to return to my fingers.
Yeah.
Stupid Cornelia Funke, why must you rock so hard? I needed that money for Highlander dvds. (TV series with Sexy Duncan and Snarkalicious Methos, obviously, not the shitty movies with Christopher "Frogface McCan'tAct" Lambert and Sean "I Ruin Everything I'm In" Connery).
Also, my Attila and Reign of Fire dvds arrived today.
Yeah, I'm so not working on my dissertation right now.

You are writing on your dissertation? Cool! What topic if I may ask?
So you can recommend Cornelia Funke? Yes, I know, she's German, but I haven't read anything by her... yet! :)

Date: 2005-02-22 08:56 pm (UTC)It wouldn't have happened if my stupid rabbit hadn't chosen that moment to sneak up on me and touch the back of my leg with his snuffly rabbit nose. Although I am glad it was the keyboard that got it and not Thlayli. True, the keyboard was more expensive to replace, but I suspect I would miss the little grey bastard if he wasn't around.
My dissertation is on transsexuality and the EU - how the European courts have improved (or otherwise) the position of trans people in EU member states. It's actually really interesting, although occaisonally I do come across things that make me furious - like the law in France that only allows trans people to change their names to something nongender-specific, and the judge in that case who insisted on refering to the complainant by her original anatomical sex, on the basis that he didn't believe it was possible for a person to go from male to female through surgery. *stabbing motions*
Ooh, Cornelia Funke is amazing! There are only three of her books out in English at the moment - Inkheart, the Thief Lord and Dragon Rider. I finished Inkheart last night; loved the whole thing from start to finish! It's almost a metastory, in a way - a story about stories, or a book about books. As an obsessive bookfreak myself, I found the character Elinor hilarious - in the words of Homer Simpson, "It's funny because it's true!"
I read the first few chapters of Dragon Rider in the bookstore today, and although it doesn't have the same appeal to me as Inkheart did, it's shaping up to be a great adventure story about dragons and talking animals, without falling into the same derivitive patterns that a lot of fantasy (especially "children's" fantasy) falls into. I haven't read any of the Thief Lord aside from the blurb on the back of the book, but I bought it because it was a pound off and I had a book token that required spending.
So yes, I totally recommend Cornelia Funke, especially since I believe she has a lot more work published in Germany than has made it's way over here. Run. don't walk, to your nearest bookshop!

O_o Wow. I'm impressed! I bet that's interesting and I can imagine you being furious about some things you stumble across... With some laws you wouldn't believe we have already reached the 21st century. :/
About Cornelia Funke: I checked Amazon a few minutes ago, wow, she has published quite a lot here, but I can't count the occasions anymore when I had "Inkheart" in my hands but didn't buy it in the end... I'll do that now, you have convinced me. :)

Date: 2005-02-22 10:22 pm (UTC)You should see some of the ridiculous provisions the original draft of the Gender Recognition Act contained, too. Like trans people weren't allowed to adopt on the basis children with trans parents would be at risk from abuse. Because 1: children in "normal" families never, ever get abused and 2: of course being born with what amounts to a terrible birth defect means you're a peadeophile.

Date: 2005-02-22 10:27 pm (UTC)that's Incredibly offensive.
and, this isnt a stupid (at least in intent) question but why hasnt it been changed yet?

Date: 2005-02-22 10:36 pm (UTC)Unfortunatly, given that it's the American Psychiatric Association that started the whole Gender Dysphoria = mental illness, and considering the current political climate in the US, I don't see it changing in the near future.
