OMG, I took half a sick day today and wound up binge watching until the end of Season 1!
It's very Eerie-esque, but I love the bits that make it different, like the flashback animations and the fact that the characters keep coming back. (For a while, I thought the trio were going to have their own versions of Marshall's friend-of-the-week, but yay, extended friends group!)
Oh my God, how incredibly sad and real did it get right at the end of season one?! The kid playing Gortimer actually boke my heart a little bit when his voice cracked as he screamed at Ranger and Mel that they wouldn't be friends anymore if they shut down the rainbow.
I really like the animations, esp. if Ranger narrates them because they always have such a nightmare quality. The toy rat, the frog...
I was doing some stuff for the comm while watching it and turned the sound off at one point, and when I looked up it was (what I know now is) the talent show ep, where Ranger and Mel are in that box onstage, the box is shaking violently, Gortimer is looking SUPER AWKWARD, and the audience is horrified... and suddenly the box busts open and Stanley steps out. I was like, ...I need to rewatch this with the sound...

I may have had something in my eye by the end of that episode...
If I had to pick a favorite character, it would be hard, but it's probably Ranger. Overall, it's just so well cast and well written, I'm so glad it got a season 2! (Which I have now watched five episodes of, despite the fact that I have a million other things to do.)
I think Ranger is my pick too, although I do like how Stanley started off as this super quiet, resigned, sad jinxed kid and after they lift the curse he now just tells random standards ries about "Manly, the smartest nicest kid", bursts out of random boxes screaming his own name, and goes on a rocknroll tour of middle school, "all killer, no filler. Tell my mom!"
In an "Oh yeah, showrunners sometimes pay attention to what you say on Twitter" moment, David Anaxagoras responded to something I posted acknowledging Eerie was an inspiration!
Yeah seriously, i was thinking Rangers grandad, then Gortimers mum showed up in tears and I was like, Gortimers dad maybe? And then... ooof. Jeez, show.
