Eerie, Indiana rewatch 2015

Hi guys,

So I'm scheduling the posts for the rewatch and I know Broken Record is at the end of the last disc, but for me it seems like it clearly belongs in the pre-Dash, pre-John Astin part of the show, and that Reality Takes a Holiday is the show's finale. So I'm gonna schedule it to be the thirteenth episode we rewatch, and then follow it with the Hole in the Head gang as number fourteen.

Obviously if anyone has especially strong feelings about this, you are absolutely entitled to skip over it and/or rewatch Hole in the Head Gang in week thirteen, and that will still be awesome because it will still be Eerie. I'm just laying it out there now in case it causes confusion hen Broken Record pops up on October 24th and peeps were expecting Grungy Bill and haunted toasters.

I have so much to say for Broken Record (I tried to restrain myself on last week's thread).
Also, I still have to catch up with this week. I totally watched the wrong episode (ATM).
Also, OCTOBER 24TH, AWWW YES! That's my birthday!

I love ATM, on the surface it's kind of dumb and moralising, but if you actually think about being a kid in that situation, it's a really sobering look at how fucking awful people can be,often without actually being through and through fucking awful people in and of themselves.

Is there anything sweeter than a Saturday birthday? Except maybe a Saturday Halloween, which we also get this year, YES.

I find Broken Record sooo uncomfortable to watch.

When I introduced my partner to Eerie, we marathonned the whole series in a day, and when Reality Takes a Holiday ended, I was all, whelp, thats it... and he was like, *checks box* no, there's another episode, and I was all, yeah but its sad and horrible, and he was like, im gonna watch it anyway, and I was all, I'll go make popcorn do you like popcorn? and then I pretended popcorn takes twenty five minutes to make and when I came back he was like WHAT WAS THAT THAT WAS HORRIBLE WHY ARE ALL THE PARENTS IN THIS TOWN TERRIBLE?! and I was like, ....yup.

And then we watched Hocus Pocus, because obviously.

Oh my god, yeah. So I don't know if this is still a thing with kid shows, but back then it was protocol for at least one episode (either every season or every series or something) to be a kind of PSA episode. Most shows did a bullying or smoking/drinking/drugs episode, but Record, to me, was that episode for EI, showing how damaging emotional abuse can be on kids. It was wildly different than ALL other PSA episodes, not only in theme, but also that it was a message directed at parents, not kids.

I thought about it, and I was all like, no, they totally still do it, I've seen it in Kim Possible and the Weekenders and... and then I realised, those shows have been off the air for a decade or more, and I have no idea what kids shows do now. I've seen anti-bullying episodes of Arthur, but I watch it on YouTube and who even knows what season those episodes are from, because Arthur has been around forever.

But anyway, yes, most of the stuff you saw as a kid was about not being a dick to other kids, or about how your parents always want whats best for you even if it doesnt seem like it, and then Eerie was like, actually, no, sometimes you think your dad's a cunt because he's an actual in-real-life cunt, and that's on him, not you.

The bit that really stuck out to me was when Todd's mum is talking to him and she says his dad doesnt mean to hurt his feelings and the verbal beatdown he just got doesn't mean his dad doesn't love him, and Todd's like, why doesnt he tell me himself? and the mum looks close to tears and says she dont know, and I love that the whole episode was set up to show how fucking weak as shit that kind of attempt at smoothing-over actually is.

And hell yeah, Saturday Halloween and Hocus Pocus! That should be watched after that day's episode! Double feature!

YES. Hocus Pocus is required Halloween viewing for any sane and decent household anyway, but ESPECIALLY it should be part of the EI rewatch.

And not that McGee from NCIS isn't cute in that movie, but I totally wanted to see Jason play Human Binx.

Right?! The bit after Max brings the Sanderson Sisters back and Binx snarls "Nice going," right in his face, is so total Dash amd Mars's interaction. Having him play human!Thackery would have made it the ultimate EI reunion.

I caught the beginning of Hocus Pocus on TV during my lunch break two weeks ago and I'm pretty sure that Jason dubs the voice of the human!Thackery too.

Meanwhile, I've only just woke up and this conversation is making my sleepy mind mix up some weird Dash-Human!Cat!Thackery in my head and I'm not at all saying that's a bad thing.....

I'd never actually noticed that - I think I need to watch it again. For science reasons, obviously.

I remember eviinsanemonkey had a plot bunny where Dash was a cat and it would play into the Hocus Pocus universe, but I don't remember reading a fic, just the idea.

II'm on my mobile at work ATM, less than ideal browsing sitch, but I'll have a look through my favourites when I'm back home on my laptop and see if there was one. Regardless, it doesn't mean someone else couldn't use it, HINTY HINT

I found the post about it but I couldnt see that the fic itself ever got posted, sad times!

This is slightly tangential, but I've seen mention several times that Broken Record didn't air during the original NBC run. But when I saw it as a teenager during the Fox Kids run, I swear as truth that I had very clear memories of having seen the episode before. I definitely remembered the Pitbull Surfers, and the dad playing the record backwards. So IDK how that happened, unless I am psychic or the internet lies.

Maybe irgot put back in after the series went into syndication and thats when you saw it?

I know there was an episode of buffy that didnt air when it was supposed to (I think the one where she can hear thoughts and jonathan is in a bell tower about to kill himself?) but by the time it came over to the uk it was back where it was supposed to be.

I dont remember ever seeing broken record on the tv, but that might just be because it was so long ago - when I got the dvds I didnt remember easily half of the episodes.
