Welcome back to the Eerie, Indiana 2015 rewatch. This Saturday, give your dog the side-eye and pay that doorknobs will be enough to save us. Ladies and gentlemen, keep the Canine Arrest Team on speed-dial, because it's time to watch... The Retainer!

Simon's role in the whole show kind of interests me. I get the feeling that the writers added him for the slightly younger audience and then realised that he was maybe an awkward clash to have as a friend to Marshall and then needed to bring in an succession of characters his own age, until they finally settled on Dash actually reoccurring (and not being that much of a friend). But poor Simon seems to have such a shitty homelife, its amazing he turned out so sweet. Its a shame they couldn't have explored his family in more depth.

You know, I never really thought about the fact that Simon attends junior high. At age 9, he'd normally be in 3rd or 4th grade, depending on when his birthday falls--very definitely elementary school. So assuming, on the inside, that he would normally be in 4th grade and BSJH starts with 6th, he's been skipped a minimum of 2 years ahead; on the outside, if he's supposed to be in 3rd grade and the junior high starts at 7th, he could be as much as 4 years ahead. Damn, son.

The only other example I can think of is Round the Twist, but then the younger kid was a little brother. It's been a long, long time since I've seen it, but I think that they shared out which family member each ep focused on too?

At the moment I'm rewatching Boy Meets World - originally for eps that Jason was in, but actually now because all the eps are just so good and I'm sure kids TV today just can't compete with the messages that this show put across. But yeah, the dynamic there is the younger kid is the lead, with a friend the same age, and then an older brother (and his best friend *g*). So still nothing like Eerie in the dynamic.

I guess Simon actually fills a couple of tropes in one as well - being both a bit smart/nerdy and a kid with a shitty homelife. Compared to the kids around him in each ep, Mars actually has very little characterisation. He's fairly bland, and in fact normal, but I guess that makes it easier to drive home the part about him being almost the only one to notice how weird Eerie is.

I'm going to have to put Round the Twist on my list of shows to rewatch after I've finished BMW. Seriously, the writers were doing some crazy drugs with all the things they came up with. I'm sure there's an ep where the youngest brother becomes a champion swimmer because he swallows this fish and it makes his penis become like a speedboat propeller!

The fox one though! I think I remember that.... I have to look for that one at the very least!

I know I had a massive crush on Shawn when I was young. Between him and various characters that it turns out young!Jason played in childhood TV shows I think that pretty much informed the type of man that is my "type". I started rewatching 50% for Jason playing Eric's best friend (and LOL, Jason's character is called Jason Marsden in the show! WTF? Could they just not be bothered with coming up with a name for the character?) and 50% I saw posts on Fandom Secrets recently that suggest Eric has some serious mental issues in the later seasons and I'm curious to see where that goes and how much people are tinhatting that...

I've seen it a couple of times around on DVD and keep thinking about buying it. I will do once I have time to fit in another show to rewatch.

I might need to push you into doing a rewatch, I'm just starting season 3 and I need someone to discuss with! Also, I'm shipping Eric/Shawn and it's so wrong but I refuse to feel any guilt over it ;D

I honestly don't know - I was naughty and downloaded it. I don't think it's on Netflix though, or I would have watched it there.

I need to look into his VA stuff more, I've not seen many of the animated things he's done. If there's both him and Will in Kim Possible maybe that's where I'll start ^_^

Definitely going to look out for both of them so I can listen to him more!

Ugh! What is it with series never releasing DVDs? I've been waiting for season 2 of a show from Comedy Central to be released for a couple of years now and I suspect they never will D: If you release season 1, follow through damnit!

Aw, I love BMW. Gotta ton of recs from that fandom if either of you want links (mainly Cory/Shawn, although there's some Eric/Shawn, and I've had an Eric/Jason half-finished fic saved in my drafts forever.)

Yes please! Any recs you've got would be great. And god, I would sell at least shares in my soul for some Eric/Jason! I can't find any anywhere D:

AAAAKKKK!!!! Thank you! Gah! Eric/Jason fics! I'm disappointed that AO3 didn't have any and I wouldn't have known where to start looking otherwise. And yes! Seriously, finish your fic!

Again, thank you!

That is pretty much the appeal of the pairing to be fair. It's the whole point of Eric, and even Eric would agree with you there.

That's a good start at least. You can get Torrents of the whole lot too pretty easily.

I don't think I've ever seen "Are You Afraid of the Dark". It's one that people reference to me and I make sage noises, but I just know it through pop culture I think...

The moment when your brain goes ahead and remembers shit from your childhood without actually bothering to keep you informed about what its doing...

First of all, hi!

Secondly, this bit: I like to think that the whole series is actually narrated by an adult Marshall, who sends his stories out into the world disguised as fiction, after getting increasingly frustrated and jaded about getting anybody to believe him about the centre of weirdness for the entire planet.

That is probably my #1 headcanon for the series. I feel very much like Marshall graduated high school and went to college elsewhere. As fascinating as I'm sure the post-secondary education system would be in Eerie, I think he would look at it from a hero's journey sort of perspective--to defeat the monster, he has to step away from the battle and train elsewhere until he is strong enough to win. But of course, half of his battle is getting people to believe the monster exists. When he gets fed up with trying to convince them, he turns it into 'fiction' instead.

I considered this a lot at one point, because I thought it would make a good background for a Mars/Dash post-series fic, with Marshall having left Eerie for 15 or 20 years and then moving back.

(I should actually go rewatch the episodes now that I know you're doing this. I have not been the best at keeping up with my DW reading list/LJ flist over the past few months.)

It is still a very enticing idea. Part of what stalled me out with it is that I was never really sure what to do, exactly, with Simon and Dash. They both stayed in Eerie, I'm sure, but like, what even do they do? Ugh.

Oh, that is a cool idea for Simon. Adding as well, with his brains (as addressed above), it's probable he would score some other grants and/or scholarships to help pay for his schooling. The Tellers would be so fucking proud of him, I am dying.

Re: Dash, having pondered on it today, I have found myself growing fond of the idea of him owning a bar. After all, it wouldn't unfeasible to imagine that some paperwork turned up some hand-wavy amount of time after Ned's departure, leaving (among other assets) ownership of the Loyal Order of Corn lodge to his "grandson." Because, I mean, Ned surely wasn't dealing with the Order 24/7. Out of uniform, he'd just be another old dude on the street, and he could've been quietly observing Dash for a while before TLOoC, preparing for the possibility that his plan would succeed and that he might want/need to provide for his replacement since he also knew (or lied through his teeth) that Dash needed to stay in Eerie.

I can totally see Simon as the Eerie vet! And imagine all the weird and wonderful "pets" and "wildlife" that he would see and treat! And of course because he's now an adult he doesn't even blink at the cat with tentacles hovering in front of a mirror on the call out he goes to (see what if did there ;P), and stuff like that.

Dash though. I'm kinda headcanoning him as being a bit of a drifter. He floats in and out of town on the trail of any clues about where he came from/just trying to survive. He's rough around the edges, but charming, has probably sold himself in more ways than one a few times, and a skilled con artist by now. When Marshall returns to Eerie he finds Simon easily enough (maybe even has an acquaintance type contact with him through his family and Facebook anyway), but Simon's not heard from Dash in a long time, and Mars finds himself unexpectedly disappointed.....

Akkk!!!! I need that Mars/Dash fic so bad! It'd be so interesting to explore Eerie from the perspective of an adult that left and has started to write off his experiences as dreams and games that were too vivid as a child. Maybe at first as an adult he'd be as blind to the weirdness as his parents were when he was a kid.

I never finished the Narnia series (see below) but that's so depressing to know that's what happens with Susan. So no, that's definitely not how its going to go down for Marshall!

Oh, definitely! By the time he came back, he'd have convinced himself that he'd made things up and blown normal situations out of proportion. But...you know, that guy from his old paper route really does look like Elvis. And when he sees them in the supermarket, Winifred Swanson and her daughter haven't aged a day, and they still dress like Mod never went out of style. And the noises he hears on trash night sound awfully loud for raccoons or deer...

Is that a short story or a book? I want to read it now, but I never have the time to read a whole book. Or more like I don't have time to finish a whole novel before the next one I want to read comes along.... I have far too many half read books piled up next to my bed!
