My brother just convinced his girlfriend to read the other Johannes Cabal books by declaring that the fourth book will be called Johannes Cabal: Mighty Pope Cannibal and then acting out a scene where Cabal eats the Pope, complete with bad Italian-inflected screaming and a tea cosy to serve as a Popehat. To be honest, I think she might find the Fear Institute a bit of a let down in comparison.

I first read that sentence to mean that the Pope in-story was wearing a tea cosy as his Popehat. Ohhh, now I'm vaguely disappointed it doesn't actually exist.

He always does this - he'll pick up on one or two tiny details of a story, then make out like they are the entire plot, and it leaves you feeling oddly resentful that, for example, the Escaflowne movie wasn't entirely based around exploding horses, Whitechapel wasn't about a lonely fox who just wanted to eat a hand (this was a particulaly bad one, since he SANG part of the explanation and somehow gave me the impression there would be musical interludes), and Gundam Wing wasn't the story of a giant robot with thigh-high robot boots and a whip.

That. That's brilliant. As someone who is herself prone to hyperbolic summaries, I tip my hat to his antics. Though I must say, even I have never sung an explanation before!

(I almost want to know how on earth he managed to stretch Gundam Wing into that)

(He was talking about the pinky-red Gundam that Zechs has later in the series - in his defence, it DOES have a whip and it does kind of look like it's wearing kinky boots, but he made it sound like the WHOLE PLOT was about a kinky S&M robot trying to whip all these other robots, and somehow failed to even mention the pilots or outer space or the idea of colony planets or freedom fighters. Naturally, I was very confused when I eventually watched it.)
