a day that will…

December 7th, 1941: the Empire of Japan bombed Pearl Harbour. American President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it “a day that will live in infamy” in his famous speech to Congress asking for a declaration of war against Japan.

That particular epithet – that’s a strong one. And unlike most such epithets, it’s held up. People know it, still.

I mean, sure, slogans like “Remember the Maine!” rallied people at the time, but it’s an historical footnote; “Remember the Alamo!” has more weight, but not because of the attack – it’s because of the hopeless and romanticised defence.

(That it was, push comes to shove, in defence of slavery is important but not relevant to my line of thought here.)

Why was the Pearl Harbour attack somehow that much worse?

It wasn’t that Japan attacked a purely military target in a United States territory. Nothing wrong with that by the rules of war. Certainly nothing infamous about it, either. Within the rules of war, it’s fair play.

It’s not that it was a surprise, even – though it was, and that tends to be what people think of when they hear the phrase. Most people at the time assumed a Japanese Imperial attack would come in the Philippines, not in Hawai’i. But surprise attacks are the meat and gravy of war, and simply good strategy – again, not a source of infamy.

It wasn’t even, really, that they started the war with the attack. That’s kind of how wars tend to go. As a rule, one doesn’t go declare war and then stand around a while giving your enemy a week or two to get their defences in place.

So why were people who were absolutely expecting war – absolutely getting ready for a war – with Japan still so very angry about the way it started? What made a crowd certain that war was inevitable – a crowd that was getting ready for it, whether they liked it or not – go, “oh, that is too goddamn far”?

It was that Japan was literally still negotiating as the bombs fell.

Roosevelt mentions this in his speech to Congress asking for a declaration of war. It’s shallow in the specifics, but it’s explicitly there, in the first minute. He didn’t have to get into the weeds of details; everybody in Congress knew.

The Japanese attack started at 12:48pm Eastern time. The military finally got word sometime after 1:30pm Eastern time. The Japanese ambassador had scheduled a meeting with Secretary of State Hull for 1:45pm, and didn’t show up until 2:05pm, by which time the bombs had been falling for over an hour – and even then, they delivered a statement responding to a previous US position paper delivered on November 26th.

It was harsh, but it was no declaration of war.

The Japanese delegation were literally negotiating as their air force’s bombs fell.

That betrayal – that subterfuge, that backstab – coloured the entire rest of the war in the Pacific, up to and including the decision to use those atomic bombs.

Does that still-negotiating-as-the-bombers-let-fly trick sound like something that just happened this afternoon?

Maybe it should.

Japan’s plan was a quick but heavy knockout blow on a military target, to weaken American forces in the Pacific and force the Americans to accede to their demands in China.

Trump’s plan was apparently also a quick but heavy knockout blow on military targets, to force the Iranians to accede to Trump’s – and Netanyahu’s – demands in the Middle East.

Iran is in no way the 1940s US; Trump’s clown car criminal crowd is in no way the leadership of Imperial Japan. This is not World War II, and since Trump didn’t go nuclear, I don’t think it’s World War III; this is not that kind of projection, so don’t make it into one.

I’m just talking infamy. As far as infamy goes?

Yeah.

I could really see saying this is an act of infamy.

Obviously, that’s the kind of thing Iran would say, no matter what. Aside from that, times have changed. Asymmetrical war, disinformation, irregular warfare as a primary strategy – all those old ideas about war have rather gone by the way side. It’s hard to talk about something as infamous in war these days.

But still. I could see it.

And more importantly… I could see people believing it.

Couldn’t you?

Soul of the Sword by Julie Kagawa

Blurb:
One thousand years ago, a wish was made to the Harbinger of Change and a sword of rage and lightning was forged. Kamigoroshi. The Godslayer. It had one task: to seal away the powerful demon Hakaimono.

Now he has broken free.

Kitsune shapeshifter Yumeko has one task: to take her piece of the ancient and powerful scroll to the Steel Feather temple in order to prevent the summoning of the Harbinger of Change, the great Kami Dragon who will grant one wish to whomever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers. But she has a new enemy now. The demon Hakaimono, who for centuries was trapped in a cursed sword, has escaped and possessed the boy she thought would protect her, Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan.

Hakaimono has done the unthinkable and joined forces with the Master of Demons in order to break the curse of the sword and set himself free. To overthrow the empire and cover the land in darkness, they need one thing: the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers. As the paths of Yumeko and the possessed Tatsumi cross once again, the entire empire will be thrown into chaos.

The second book in the Shadow of the Fox series. I'm still enjoying this immensely - my one complaint would be some of the dumb decisions made by the protagonist. But she's a teenager so I suppose it's to be expected. Once again, the book takes us into a world of Japanese mythology and folklore, with several forbidden romances blooming. I've already started the third book, and can't wait to read the conclusion of this adventure!

But also, with this book, I've completed my entire bingo card:

Thank you to [personal profile] kingstoken for running this challenge. I read lots of books, including some I might not have without the Bingo challenge. I always appreciate things that take me out of my comfort zone or my usual reading.

30 Days Wild - Week Three

Week Three had Learning About Wildlife as its theme.  I wasn't attracted to any of the possibilities, but the BTO website has lots of information I've been dipping into. I did get out and about a bit - less than I'd hoped, but it was HOT so not ideal for anyone.

However, I spotted a blackbird on two separate occasions (one male, one female), so I was able to submit my observations.

And yesterday, although not actually in the garden, I saw the house martins flying around, catching flies.  And also the house roofs at one point had a whole row of starlings, shouting about something - probably the threat of rain.  This is the tree they flew off to.

And my Week 3 badge:

I meant to spend about five minutes on plant care and then proceeded to spend about an hour, instead, complete with running myself out of dirt. That's a bit how my weekend has gone, though? I've gotten a lot done.

I took a deep breath and pushed myself past one of my major mental blocks with archiving and it... wasn't bad? Like, I had bumped up against some very old stories that are... Listen, they were never good. And then I asked myself if I really wanted to archive them. Yes, I want them archived. Yes, I've posted them to mailing lists, to Geocities, to my own site, to AO3. I can post them to Neocities and DW. They will continue to be a part of what I've created.

I also reminded myself that I just have to archive them; I don't have to read them. I also wrote a couple of drabbles and then... also archived those! Super-easy, even though one needed a fandom page made. But super-easy! I like this.

Finished up MG Exia, who I totally didn't want to throw out a window multiple times last weekend, nope. He definitely had his moments, but overall I didn't hate the build. (Which is good because I'm going to be doing it a lot.)

I started on HG Sazabi, who will be a much-quicker no-frills build. I'm going to hold off on polls for a bit until I get through my own little to-do list. I still need to build the HG Calrea that got me back into this bullshit.

Caught up with [personal profile] purplehellebore for a birfday lunch and whatnot. Went to the home improvement store and did not buy a 9/16ths wrench. (But I had two people restraining me...) Got some paint from the nerd store. Finished up a prototype for a hollow book.

Shadowverse Worlds Beyond released the other day but the less said about that the better. We're already grousing on [community profile] mobilegames.

A Hip & Knee Update

badfalcon: (Sunflowers)
[personal profile] badfalcon
You know how you always hear that healthcare in this country is a postcode lottery? Yeah you don't realise how true that is until you move postcodes

So as y'all know I've been having joint issues since I was a teenager, had surgery for a tracking issue on my right knee, and knew that I had 'asymmetry between the ilia and the orientation of the acetabulum' and that my left leg was shorter than the other. I understood that my pelvis was wonky, basically.

But Devon, despite being the ones who completely fucking missed it all when I was a kid, are making up for it now, and I have a full report with a few different things going on. Some of it I expected, and some of it was new to me.

🦴 The Summary (In Doctor Speak):
Mild degenerative changes in both hips (early osteoarthritis)
Subchondral sclerosis (thickening of bone under worn cartilage)
Narrowing of joint spaces
Bony lipping and overcoverage of the femoral heads (impingement)
Asymmetry between the two sides of my pelvis and hip sockets
A projection (a kind of bony overgrowth) from the top of both hip sockets
Mild degenerative changes in the right knee, with some tendon-related inflammation

🧠 What That Actually Means:
In plain English: my hips are wearing down a bit - not dramatically, but enough to show changes on imaging. There’s less cushioning cartilage, and the bone underneath is reacting by thickening. There are also bony overgrowths, and my hip sockets are shaped in a way that is putting extra stress on the joint.

That asymmetry between the two sides of my pelvis and the “extended projection” from my hips sockets means I’ve had an unusual joint structure for a long time and has grown extra bone to balance it out...

The right knee is joining the party too, with some inflammation where tendons anchor into bone. Delightful.

🧭 So What Now?
I have an invitation to a 'long-term condition care planning' appointment where I find out what happens next. I've been in chronic pain for like 30 years and I didn't even know 'long-term condition care' was a thing until now.

The doctor's report says the arthritis is 'mild' in terms of x-ray severity but as anyone with chronic pain knows, “mild” on paper doesn’t always match what your body feels.

Next steps will probably include:

  • Physio, to keep everything moving and reduce pain
  • Maybe pain meds or topical treatments
  • Watching how things evolve and deciding whether more imaging is needed (like MRI) to get a clearer picture, especially around the hip structure

💬 How I’m Feeling:
Honestly, it's a lot. I'm tired. I'm frustrated and angry. But there's a lot of relief. There's a name for it. There is actually something wrong. It's not been in my head since I was a teenager. Knowing there's a structural reason for what I'm feeling, for the pain I've been in for so long, for how I struggle to move, for my day-to-day experiences for decades.

And I have a Li who can advocate for me when I can't do it myself. I've spent so many years not being listened to, to being brushed aside - but Li is helping me ask for the support I need, speaking up for me, for being incredibly clear to medical professionals that this is not something we're happy for me to have to just live with any more without further investigation. She's the one who insisted on the x-rays when we saw the doctor last month for the pain and stiffness and got the bursitis diagnosis.

So now we have the start of some answers an

I hit the Bakery while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. (I got in two additional walks later for a total of 1 mile!) I did two loads of laundry, the usual amount of hand-washing dishes, and scooped kitty litter. I finished the book I started yesterday and spent most of the day with mom.

Temps started out at 61.3(F) and reached 87 (according to Pip, since I didn’t get home until after the temps hit the high). It was hot, but I luckily spent most of the day inside an air conditioned house.

I am a dog

I attended an Ambient Lit workshop at Voidspace and we were asked to take a walk and take notes and photos. I took a random card and it said “dog” on it.

I am a dog.

I walk through a puddle.

I sniff a bag of rubbish with a coffee cup in.

I am curious about a traffic cone.

I am looking at the road and pavement a lot. There's an intriguing drain cover, I look at the bottom of a bollard.

Another bag of rubbish I sniff at.

I see people waving their arms about and wonder about barking at them.

I walk past a flower on the pavement.

I am lingering longer.

I go up a narrow alleyway and end up at a dead end, so turn around.

I haven't seen any other dogs. I hope to.

St Pancras Ironwork Co Engineers

An interesting Ironworks sign on the pavement.

A drain cover clonks as I walk over it.

There are no balls to chase.

I bark at some pigeons.

I sniff something on the ground.

I chase pigeons

I want to bark at the policemen.

Shallow

The ground says Shallow.

Fountain

I think I've found another dog! Woof! Woof!

I run away from my owner to get back to the theatre on time.

…but here are some options from a foreign-policy standpoint as laid out by The Atlantic. Seems a reasonable summary to me.

What it completely leaves out is that this is a direct violation of the War Powers Act, the UN Charter (to which the US is signatory), and even the National Security Act. I guess that’s not important anymore.

Correctly, there are calls for impeachment tonight from outside and within Congress. I suggest you write whoever you’ve got up there to do the same. But I do not expect it to go anywhere; I am absolutely confident the MAGAts will find a way to justify their 100% spin on the “peace president” and why bombing Iran – an absolute act of war – is just fine and all the more reason to worship their shit-stain incarnate God Emperor.

I’ve got a short essay going up tomorrow morning at 7:48am. If you know why 7:48am on Sunday is an important time, you’ll probably have some idea what it’s about. You’re probably not completely right – but you’re quite certainly not really wrong, either.

I had a great Saturday.

Mushi was very stubborn about taking his prevet meds to make him calm so he went in without medicine. But he was a good boy for his shots. Vet didn't see anything wrong so he gets six months without vet visits until his blood work and old man check up. Lucky him

Then Ian wasn't hungry at lunchtime so I ordered the KFC I've been craving. Original recipe chicken thighs with coleslaw and biscuits yum!

I spent my day listening to YouTubers talk about things while making Icons. I'll be changing up my icons on here soon.

We had a rain storm that took out the power at one point but I had hated the icon in progress and coming back to it afterwards allowed me a better version of the levels. First one was muted but second time around, I wanted vibrant.

I adore stormy weather.

Dinner was leftovers. I had ravioli with leftover Alfredo sauce.

Jasper got sick a bit today after a few days of not getting sick. Poor kitty we'll have to contact the vet if he keeps getting sick.
