So, I just got back from seeing Serenity...
To take it all in order:
Why'd they change the actress who played Baby River? Not a big thing, just a minor niggle. And the new girl doesn't look anything like Summer Glau.
Nazi Simon. Rrowr! So sexy and stern and authoritive... I would never cheat on Jayne (unlike Hannah, I am loyal to my fandom lovegods) but if I was going to? Sign me up for a piece of that fine manflesh.
Jayne and his many weapons. I love my Jayne. His sad little "Aww" when Mal wouldn't let him bring those grenades was so adorable.
Simon and Mal discussing Simon's angry face versus his scared face: what? That was just so random when Simon started talking about how if he was scared his eyes would be wider.
Mal informing Simon that he wasn't part of the crew; again, WHAT?! Did we somehow just forget that Safe ever happened? Or did Simon just shoot Mal down in favour of a certain box-dropping man-ape-gone-wrong thing? I bet that was it.
Mal bringing River along on that job: say it with me, folks... WHAT?! What happened to "she makes things not be smooth"? Not that I'm denying that Mal can fuck up just about any deal regardless of which wacky sidekick he's brought along for the ride, but seriously, Mal - why you gotta make me hate you?
Movie!Reavers: Somehow not as scary as the ones in the TV show. Kinda looked like the Orcs from LOTR. So still scary, just not inducing that cold sweat you got watching the ship in the pilot.
Jayne getting shot by Reavers: OH MY GOD NO DON'T KILL JAYNE HE'S SORRY FOR WHAT WENT DOWN ON ARIEL! Once I knew he was safe, I got a good laugh out of that whole "Don't let me get et! They take me, you shoot me first!" Mal: *points gun at Jayne* "Not right now!" scene. Once again, I love my Jayne.
Simon punching Mal in the face: Woo! I have been waiting for that since Mal decked him way back in the pilot. Seriously, in terms of amusing come-uppance, this is the equivilent of Lindsey running Angel down with that truck. Only without the whole evil hand thing, obviously.
Mal kicking Simon and River off Serenity; seriously, could he be any more in love with Simon?
Kaylee and the vibrator comment had me in stitches; I love that whole older brother vibe she has with Mal and Jayne (although Jayne's reaction may make that analogy a little more creepy and Southern than I generally like). I was killing myself at Mal's expression; he perfect combination of horror and shock, and just a little curiosity.
River freaking out over bad anime and picking that bar fight: did you see how Jayne tried to protect her? FOR SIMON, damn it. That was so cute. Note how when Jayne is with someone, be it a whore or a Mudder or a pretty, waistcoat-wearing Doctor, he tries to protect them? Whereas Mal just, you know, picks fights and treats them like shit. I'm thinking, if Saffron had been who she claimed to be, she would have been better off with Jayne.
Mister Universe. Sex with robots is more common than people think! He was fun.
Random Assassin Bloke: *snore* I don't know what the hell his deal was, but he's nothing like as fun as Jubal Early. Also let's add another "snore" for Inara, because she never fails to raise in me feelings of utter apathy.
Book and his colony: well, I'm not so bothered about Book, although I would have liked to find out what his story was. Still, meh. So long, Preacher Man. Although your death brings me no particular joy, I am not shedding tears for you either.
All those other planets: I noticed Whitefall on there (so long, Patience), but I didn't notice Persephone's name on the screens. I hope Badger is still around; I like him and his very fine hat and his tea-parties with finger foods and "the finest in beverages that make you go blind".
I did, however, get a little choked up at the crew Reavering-up Serenity. Not sure why, but something about that upset me deeply. Probably means I'm some kind of pervy ship-fancier, destined to haunt the halls of fandom writing Jack Sparrow/Black Pearl, Jack Aubrey/Surprise and Mal Reynolds/Serenity. Destiny is a bitch, man.
Holy Mother of Christ, the Alliance was responsible for the birth of the Reavers. I didn't see that coming at all. That final part of the recording, Jayne looking all freaked out and Wash just quietly moving to switch it off; that was so well done.
Mal unleashing the entire contents of Reaver Territory onto RAB (omfg! He has the Horcrux!) was another "Holy shit!" moment. I'm not a fan of Mal, but I do find his moments of real darkness intriguing.
Oh dear God, Wash! I was so stunned, I didn't even react at first, and then... open the floodgates, we got a gusher here. And Zoe's little suicide run and Jayne screaming at her to get back behind the barricade... I was pretty much crying from the moment Wash bought it until the final credits rolled. That final scene of Mal in the cockpit and asking "Are you gonna ride shotgun with me?", and Wash's dinosaurs are all arranged along the control panel, I honestly thought for a moment Wash would answer.
Zoe's comment that none of them will get out of Mister Universe's Den o' Robot-Loving, and Jayne replies "Well, I might" in that whiny little kid voice made me smile. Oh Jayne. This is why I love you so. Also his rescuing Zoe. Before I saw Serenity, I'd see those Jayne/Zoe fics being posted on LJ, I would look at them and think "You're nuts, man." And now... I still think you're nuts, but I can kinda see your reasoning.
Simon catching a bullet; again, I really thought he was going to die. Cue another rush of tears. But then River does that whole "You;re always looking out for me; now it's my turn," reassured me. And you know River is never going to die, so no cause for alarm there.
Fight scene between Mal and RAB: snore. Honestly, I think at this point I was still in shock over Wash.
The room with the console in a platform with no walkways and surrounded by haning wires; I'm absolutely sure that's a shout-out, but buggered if I can remember where it's from.
The scene at the end, however, where Mal walks away and all the metal platforms form up under his feet? Totally an X-Men homage. Although seriously, Mal, like you could ever be as cool as Sir Ian McKellen.
Simon and Kaylee getting it on at the end of the film: Gross. No really, gross. Kaylee, I love you, but Simon is gay, gay, gay. I hate Simon/Kaylee.
All in all, it was a pretty solid movie. The only real fault, as I see it, is the Kaylee/Simon evil and the fact that that stupid RAB got to live and steal Horcruxes another day. I'm still cut up about Wash, though.
