It's not that hard to get into at however many volumes there are now. I did, about a year ago. Bought a box set and became obsessed. But the anime sticks so close to the manga that you don't really need to read it, I guess. You can watch the anime up to date, then switch to the manga fairly seamlessly.
But occasionally, the anime invents its own storylines, and they are nowhere near as good as the real stories taken from the manga. You're coming up to the end of season three. There follows two seasons of the 'Bount' storyline. It's okay, but it's extra to the real story and fit in a bit awkwardly. My advice would be to skip it, finish the real story up to date, then go back for the extra bits. That's what I did after getting through that one. Still not watched some of the extra stuff, but it's no real loss.
