Start July as you mean to go on

Technically this was yesterday, but I climbed a hill and had an eagle fly past me. (The hill is the Bodenburg Butte in Palmer, AK.)

Photo from a high vantage point, looking down on farms and fields stretching to blue mountains with their tops covered in clouds. Small figure of an eagle is visible against the clouds.

I realize the eagle is more like a dot, but if you've tried to take a quick photo of a bird, this is without zoom (I was just trying to snap a fast shot without completely losing the experience of having an eagle flying in front of me) so it is actually very close! After it flew past, I turned around and two teenage guys were standing above me, having just descended from the top and watched it too. "Sick," one of them said in obvious delight, and we nodded at each other.

I'm down in Southcentral doing Mom Things. Mom has been moved out of the rental where she was living since last August, and she was supposed to go home via helicopter today, but the weather was a problem. But that's why I reserved two extra days at the Airbnb beforehand, just in case. Tomorrow we try again! She was very respectful of my space today - I think she recognized that I was planning on having the evening to myself tonight and it didn't happen - and I wrote both fanfic and original fiction, and took a long walk to sort some plot things out in my head. Thursday I go home, and perhaps drive the Denali Highway on my way, if the wildfire smoke isn't too bad.

New computer is now up and running. I am just about finished moving in, I think.

I mentioned that because my current monitor is really old, an adaptor was necessary to deal with obsolete cables, but that Husband could just pick one up as click and collect and the whole process was only delayed by a few hours while waiting for the shop to open.

Turns out that wasn't the last of our problems! This old monitor was constructed in such a way that the sockets are in a little cavity on the back, probably so that there wouldn't be anything sticking out and looking unseemly or something. What nobody had foreseen, however, was that cable + adaptor was too tall for said cavity!

Creative solution: Having first determined to his satisfaction that all the electronic bits were elsewhere and the bottom edge of the cavity was indeed just plastic, Husband proceeded (with permission) to make a hole in it.

It was a nothing to lose situation, really. Alternative to it not working was to get a new monitor. Alternative to not trying was also get a new monitor. So you might as well try, right?

Result: Works fine and you can't see it.

AKC Courtneyyyyyy Culture Festival #184: Shania Gracia

I am going to lay it out on the table so there can be no misunderstanding: I’m not going to write about every member of the overseas sister groups. I just don’t know enough about these groups, and, several years in, I think they are big enough to have their own fans, their own followings, and I don’t think I could really justice when talking about that, however, AKB48’s sixty-sixth single is going to be with us in a few months, and with that comes the long overdue inclusion of members from the further afield overseas groups in the senbatsu as part of the anniversary celebrations so it would be remise of me not to talk about those members. tl;dr Shania Gracia.

Gracia!

JKT48’s third generation debuted in 2014 about a month after my favourite member of the group, Cindy, left the group under a cloud. Arriving as a trainee, Gracia was promoted alongside her peers to Team T when the group was formed in January a year later, Harugon being appointed as captain of the team as the group’s longest serving member at that time. In mid-2016, Gracia appeared in the senbatsu for Mae Shika Mukanee (Hanya Lihat Ke Depan) before the group’s shuffle event in September that saw her join Team KIII.

JKT’s teams have a history of being disbanded and reformed, a practice that feels a little unsettling to me as Team T presently has no members at all in 2025. I don’t think this suggests that we’re going to see AKB move away from the generation system any time soon, yet I could also see management changing course for this kind of thing after the anniversary.

This speedrunning of JKT history and of Gracia’s time thus far in the group possibly fails to take in the extent of her popularity as it feels like she is a big deal in Jakarta with notable celebrities amongst the coterie of her fans and birthday wishes from former politicians. Although the former third generation is presently down to just two members—Gracia and Feni Fitriyanti, who is on hiatus as of August, and whom we probably should talk about at some point due to QUADLIPS, a sort of international UNLAME that AKS rolled out last year—it feels very much like their introduction was the beginning of JKT48 gaining their own identity with Gracia’s being very much an important factor in that process.

Having gone from captain of KIII in 2020 to presently acting as the captain of the group as a whole, it feels like AKS are banking on both Gracia and Feni in the hopes that their popularity in Indonesia will translate into popularity in Japan.

I don’t know, friends! At the time of writing this, I am literally second-guessing what will happen with the sixty-sixth single and how that release will set the stage for AKB in the future. Gracia continues to rank in the senbatsu during JKT’s general elections, and she has continued to appear with regularity on releases since 2016. Like Feni, in terms of where Gracia is as an idol, it feels like the only options left for her in future are either graduation or international success, whichever comes first.

M-T-W

Luckily, shutdown this year has us staying on our shifts. (Though I admit to being slightly sad to not be able to grab takeout every day after work...)

Unfortunately it is still stupidly hot despite being dark and the humidity is actually brutal.

Got an amusing postcard from [personal profile] misbegotten, thank you! And zines from [personal profile] used_songs, yaaaay! (I flipped through them quickly, will look properly over the weekend, probably.)

And received some lovely icons over in [community profile] femgiftboxes from [personal profile] cosmic_whore_writes and [personal profile] linky. <3 I wrote three things, which I will try to get archived to my own spaces this weekend for easier reading. ^_^;

[community profile] sunshine_revival has started. The first prompt includes goals/plans, and since I do those monthly anyway, I'll get that posted sooner than later. (but not til after work, at least)

A few minutes ago, the first drop of 'Gundam Summer Fest' went live on the Premium Bandai site. I had a kinda chonky list of things I wanted and low expectations because "things sell out instantly" and yeaaah, lol. I actually managed nine of sixteen things on my list and then added in a couple other normal pre-orders with the same shipping month, so I'm pretty happy! There'll be at least one other drop next month? and then whatever after the pop-up tour is over, and of course I'm actually going to try to get to the last pop-up tour date so there might be some of these kits there?

I owe a post of kit photos and whatnot. Hopefully over the weekend.

Mudlarking - 26 - Eyeball

Low tide and lunch time coincided so I headed towards Custom House.

The tide was out enough that the foreshore was a good size, but there was quite a lot of broken glass in the left direction and some sinking mud furthest to the right, but in between, there were pebbles and bits of Bartmann jugs and tiles and other wonders.

I also saw a few bits of seaweed.

It was a very hot and sunny day and as I walked along the foreshore, I thought about how the day was just spectacular and how happy I was to be there by the river.

Later that evening, the tide was up and the steps at Blackfriars already had water on them but a man not wearing a shirt stood in the water, throwing stones.

I looked at my finds when I got home and was convinced that what I had previously thought was a clay marble was actually an eyeball. It looked sort of white with a pupil and with red veins, and for a while I didn't want to touch it, before I convinced myself again that it really is a marble.

I found some interesting sherds of pottery on the foreshore - nice raised patterns from Bartmann jugs, a pipe that has initials, Westerwald stoneware fragments, another piece of flint, and some Metropolitan Slipware.

Sometimes you're puzzling over why the characterization doesn't seem right, and then you realize that it's because you wrote someone having wayyyy more maturity and self-awareness than they should. Hoo boy.

Well, at least now I know how to fix this thing. :V

Speaking of writing, signups for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang will be opening on July 10! This is a panfandom fest where the goal is to write a fic of at least 5k featuring whatever fulfills your desires/tickles your fancy/brings you joy. You can sign up with a WIP, too, rather than starting something totally new.

I've participated in it a few times before and always found it good fun. The July signup + September deadline + minimum wordcount has done wonders for getting me to tackle ideas longer than my usual and finish things that have languished in my WIP folder for years.

Natsu no Christmas!! 🎄🎉🎁💝🍰

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas in July!! 🎄🎉🎁💝🍰 When was it that I started to be able to only write a certain kind of story in winter and summer? It's not that I do not love spring and autumn, yet somehow, they feel somewhat less than. I recently read The Frolic of the Beasts by Mishima which struck me as the perfect summer story in its depiction of the heat, of the sea, and of disfunction. Iwai Shunji's Fireworks, Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom? similarly feels like it evokes the unease of the warmer months, of struggling to come to terms with things, as does all of Higurashi. Maybe this is something I've trying to wrestle with for a few years now. Regardless, there is a certain kind of story that only seems to make sense in summer or winter.

Over Christmas, I wrote a lot in the early hours of the morning, more things that I could post for Write Whatever the Heck You Want, Courtney!, more things than I could post without alienating you, friends. In summer and winter, there's an unsettled feeling that comes over me that seems to descend from either the extreme heat or the extreme cold, and I think I might get closer to writing "true yuri" during these moments. This isn't to say I have succeeded at all, but in these seasons, I try to write matters outside of the usual nonsense that I post—or maybe I just present the themes I usually do in a way that strips them bare of their usual window dressing. Christmas is about the unwrapping, so they say. This month, I'm going to post some of that stuff, and also, presumably write a lot more. Sometimes, I think you have to push yourself to write things in a different way in order to improve so... I'm going to do that once more. [community profile] precuretokuprompt is running once again this month, the next batch of episodes for Write More Power Rangers falls at the end of the month, so I'll still do that usual things, but whilst the weather is warm, whilst the sun is high, whilst our lips still carry the taste of shaved ice and watermelon, of fruit popsicles and lollies, I thought I'd take some time out to try and articulate a now familiar sort of ennui.

Mudlarking 25 - Limehouse butterflies

A goose waddled up to me, inquisitively. The other geese, mostly Canada geese and a few goslings, lay on the beach, and I tried to avoid going close to them. The swans also loomed large. It was as if the swans and geese were guarding a patch of foreshore. When the tide went out a bit, I cautiously moved between them and the foreshore, not wanting to scare them away. “It's okay,” I told one goose, ”it's okay”.

One man, who I thought must be a pro mudlarker, quickly reached the third beach along when the tide was still fairly up, but it seemed that when he got there, he just took his top off and sunbathed on his own private beach, and I'm not sure he was mudlarking at all. A second man tried to get to the third beach along but wasn't paying enough attention to the boats and the waves splashed at him and he ran back.

I saw an ant.

The Canada geese swam away in a line and I watched as they floated past on the waves.

A white butterfly fluttered around the foreshore.

People were paddling in the Thames.

I was picking up pottery sherds.

A man said, “hello”, but I wasn’t sure if it was to me, as my back was to him and the sound of the waves splashing on the shore was loud at that point, and I didn't look around.

I found a lot at Limehouse:

A button, a cowrie shell, a stone that says “oy”, the most squiggly piece of combware I’ve found so far, a sherd that would have said “Staffordshire England” and another sherd that says “pottery”.

I like the colours of the pottery and glass I find in Limehouse - the sherds that are pale pinks and blues and yellows, and the glass that is light blue.

So much pronoun confusion! But you can't exactly switch to the more appropriately pronouned Broadway version when you're making a vid album. Pronouns aside, we knew this had to be a Buffy/Faith vid right away, and that it should be framed by "Who Are You?" and "This Year's Girl," focused on Faith's resentment when she wakes from her coma and sees how Buffy's life has gone on while she's lost everything. The emphasis on season 4 did mean (a) that we vidded a lot more Riley than anticipated, lol, and also (b) that we left a lot of great season 3 clips on the cutting room floor, though, which is what led to this vid thrown together from the leftovers folder.

The Day in Spikedluv (Monday, June 30)

I arrived at mom’s at 6:15am, so, as you might imagine, I didn’t get a lot done before I left. Mom agreed that she would like to get out of the house and go for a ride, so I was able to get my shopping done at Price Chopper while she people-watched in the parking lot. (We also took the groceries to my house so I could put the cold stuff away, and stopped to fill her gas tank and for me to pick up a book at the library on the way back to her house.)

I was relieved at 5pm. I stopped at the library again to return a book I finished reading this afternoon. After I got home I did a load of laundry (washed and dried), hand-washed dishes, scooped kitty litter, and took a shower.

I finished the Duncan Kincaid book I was reading and watched the first half of the new Hannah Swenson movie.

Temps started out at 54.1(F) and reached 89.2 (at 5pm when I got home; Pip said it had gotten up to 93). I’m really glad I wore shorts even though it was a cool morning, because it heated up quickly.

Call your Republican Senators RIGHT NOW.

Not later; not tonight; RIGHT NOW. Pick up the phone and dial the switchboard if you don’t know their office’s direct number:

Tell your Republican Senator or Senators that you demand they vote AGAINST the Big Ugly Bill that transfers wealth to the billionaire class at a scale not seen in decades if ever, and balloons the national debt to levels never imagined.

They’re still going through amendments. There is still time, if you call RIGHT. NOW.

30 Days Wild - Week Four & End of Month Summary (also 25 Days in 2025 - Thing #16)

Week 4 had a creative theme, so I wrote a tanka:

Counting garden birds
Filling up the water bowls
Walking through the woods
Small steps to gentle progress
Building a lifetime's habit

And I downloaded a knitting pattern from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, to knit a bittern - a 'knittern' for making later.

In addition, I downloaded 14 spotter sheets for use during different seasons (and therefore encouraging me to go out), plus masks and colouring sheets for our after school club.

Finally, I made a bumblebee felt craft brooch from a kit I'd myself a while ago.

Looking back on the 30 Days Wild challenge, it's been fun and hopefully will encourage me to do more - I always feel it would be a good idea, but finding the necessary motivation is important.  I've become a member of the British Trust for Ornithology (it's not very expensive) and have submitted two weeks' worth of garden bird sightings.  And I'm currently watching the house martins flying around catching flies.
